The BBC claims to have confirmed an anonymous source was behind the leak to Apple-based publications code9to5Mac and MacRumors.

Some details in the code seem to hint that Apple intends to unveil a high-end model alongside more modest updates to its existing handsets.

Other discoveries include images of a new Apple Watch and AirPod headphones, a set-up process for Face ID, and the introduction of Animoji, animated emoji characters.

Face recognition

Apple’s new iPhone will ditch the fingerprint sensor – and in its place will be facial recognition, with a front-facing camera.

You’ll be able to use it to authenticate Apple Pay, the code reveals.

Wireless charging

This feature has been strongly rumoured for a long time, but the leak confirms that at least one iPhone model will support wireless charging.

It’ll use the Qi wireless charging standard but it seems likely that Apple’s phones won’t work with chargers from other brands.

New ‘Home bar’ – and no Home button

Apple iPhone 8?

Possibly the biggest change for users will be that the phone’s Home Button is to disappear – – instead, there’ll be a bar of ‘virtual’ buttons which you can use to navigate in and out of apps.

New ‘all screen’ look

The new phone will boast an ‘all screen’ look similar to Samsung handsets, with an edge-to-edge HD Screen.

It’ll also boast a longer 18.5:9 aspect ratio (similar to Samsung phones) – and a native resolution of 2436 x 1125 pixels.

Improved power button

With the Home button done away with, the power button is stepping up a gear – with double presses activating Apple Pay, and holding the button down activating Siri.
