2018 iPhones Likely to Support Dual-SIMs, Have Bigger OLED Displays

Looks like Apple is not yet ready to bid farewell to LCD. The display on the phone is expected to feature a 6.1-inch tall TFT LCD display. This is in spite of Apple’s decision to move forward with OLED screens for its flagship handsets. It’s believed that it’s harder for Apple to produce additional color options in the glass back design of the iPhone 8 and iPhone X, hence why this year’s models are available in fewer color variations than last year’s. Meanwhile, the iPhone X only comes in Silver or Space Gray and the iPhone 8 in Silver, Spacer Gray, and Gold.

If Apple does use metal backs for the next iPhone, Casetek, a subsidiary of iPhone assembler Pegatron, could become a supplier for the first time.

According to the report, the upcoming iPhone, not sure whether it will be called iPhone 9 or iPhone XI, will only have a single change in its design and it is the metal back.

A different source disclosed that Casetek is already trying out new casings for the LCD model in hopes that it would be chosen to supply the back case for the 6.1-inch iPhone. It is said to be the most cheapest iPhone of Apple ever.

Apple is also rumored to be launching two other iPhone moels next year. Its screen will not be equipped with Force Touch feature. The analysts also said that Apple’s 2018 iPhones may offer as much as 512GB of storage, and the iPhone X Plus version will support two SIM cards.

The OLED phone will reportedly come with a 5.8-inch display and will come as a sequel to the iPhone X.

Kuo has also claimed that the 6.1-inch iPhone would come with a lower-resolution display.

The low-end LCD device out of the three will be assembled by Pegatron and possibly Wistron. So it’s best to take all these rumors with a grain of salt.

If true, the new models will come as welcome news to suppliers across Asia, especially Sharp and Japan Display, which would have lost a significant portion of their LCD business if Apple switched entirely to OLED displays.
